WM Opens Single-Stream Plant in South Florida

Houston-based Waste Management has announced plans for a 100,000-sq.-ft. single-stream recycling facility in Pembroke Pines, Fla. According to the company, the facility, which will be run in a partnership with Miami-Dade County, Fla., will process up to 1,000 tons of recyclables per day.

“Items recycled at our state-of-the-art facility provide Miami-Dade County residents significant environmental benefits,” said Patrick DeRueda, president of Waste Management Recycle America (WMRA), in a press release.

The announcement comes as part of Waste Management’s commitment to triple the amount of recyclables it manages by 2020.

"The single-stream recycling process makes it much easier for our residents to recycle," said Kathleen Woods-Richardson, director of the Miami-Dade County Department of Solid Waste Management, in a press release. "With more than 340,000 households, the new Miami-Dade recycling program can make a tremendous positive impact on our environment."
