Otter Tail County, Minn. recently released its audit of the area’s residential waste and found that the community’s recycling rate has increased.

In the audit, 230 garbage bags were collected from neighborhoods and sifted through by 20 people. The waste was sorted into seven categories: garbage, recycling, organic waste, household waste, reusables, electronics, wood, and scrap metal.

The audit revealed that more people are recycling since Fergus Falls switched to single-sort recycling. However, the county says there is still room for improvement as almost 15% of recycling was still ending up in the trash. Food waste in the area has gone down by about 10% over the last four years.
