Following a customer dispute at a Monroe County, Ga. recycling center, officials have been discussing ways to avoid further conflict.

The Monroe County Board of Commissioners has been discussing ways to help employees at recycling centers following disputes with residents using the facilities. Recently there was a specific incident where a resident became angered and used derogatory language toward an attendant when the resident was prohibited from recycling certain items.

Commissioners noted that attendants can’t ban people from recycling the items and should instead be giving additional training. They explained that they felt that residents should be allowed to dispose of certain home construction waste, such as toilets and wood planks, which is currently prohibited. They believe that clearer rules would avoid these kinds of conflicts.

Other officials argued that they should continue to impose strict limitations on accepted materials. This camp pushed for enhanced signage to clearly state what can and cannot be accepted at the facilities rather than changing its policies.

Ultimately, the decision has been made to install very visible signs at all recycling centers, laying out exactly what can be accepted and what materials are prohibited.
