Fixing the Nuclear Waste Problem

The challenge of siting nuclear waste disposal in the United States has remained unsolved for over six decades. 

Some have focused on forcing waste into Yucca Mountain, while others have explored consolidated storage sites. The National Academy of Sciences and experts advocate isolating nuclear waste in geologic repositories.

The root of the problem lies in the exemption of nuclear waste from environmental laws. To resolve this issue, experts suggest ending this exemption, allowing federalism to guide state consent and public acceptance, and empowering the Environmental Protection Agency and states to regulate nuclear waste facilities.
