McAllen Recycling Center Welcomes Residents to Educational Event, Looking to Prevent Contamination

The McAllen Recycling Center, located in McAllen, Tx., is hosting an educational event to teach locals the correct way to recycle.

"If you put in your recycling bin a tuna can, it's metal, you can recycle it. But if you put it there, and you didn't rinse it off, chances are that it's going to mess up the paper and the cardboard," Recycling Education Coordinator Abril Paz said.

The McAllen Recycling Center is facing a few issues, including contamination, recyclables being placed in plastic bags, and more.

"The machinery can get stuck with the plastic bags. Whenever you try to rip one apart, it takes a long time to actually break," Paz said.

Paz comments that a third of the materials that are brought into the center can’t be recycled or ruin the load.
