Mercedes Spends Over $30 Million for German Battery Recycling Plant Construction

A purchase order for Neometals’ joint venture company, Primobius, has been submitted by Mercedes Benz to build a hydrometallurgical “hub.”

A purchase order for Neometals’ joint venture company, Primobius, has been submitted by Mercedes Benz to build a hydrometallurgical “hub.”

This purchase order, for $30.7 million, will go to completing a new lithium-ion battery recycling plant in Kuppenheim, Germany. The order further grows the relationship between Primobus and Mercedes, which includes the fabrication, installation, and commissioning of the recycling plant.

The new recycling plant will be Mercedes’ first thrust into the recycling sphere and will represent a significant philosophical and operational shift for the company. As Mercedes moves toward exclusive electric vehicle production, the company intends to reduce resource consumption and establish closed-loop recycling of raw battery materials.
