Changes to Pittsburgh’s trash and recycling collection have begun now that we’ve entered 2024, and residents could be fined if they violate the new rules.
“We will no longer take cardboard boxes on the non-recycling weeks,” said Shawn Wigle, superintendent of environmental services in the Department of Public Works. “We’re going to leave those on the off weeks. If it’s not your recycling week, those will be left.”
In the past, if cardboard boxes were put out on non-recycling weeks, the city would collect them to keep the streets clean. Now, the city is asking to only have flatted and bundled cardboard placed outside when it’s a resident’s designated week to do so.
Pittsburgh is also changing its recycling collection. The city distributed over 90,000 blue bins to residents and is asking them to use the bins rather than leaving recycling in a bag on the curb.
If residents don’t comply with the changes, they’ll be issued a warning. Continued failure to comply could result in fines.
