Northeast Ohio is prepared for the onslaught of materials that will make way to recycling centers following the holiday season.

"The last two weeks of December and into the early part of January any material recovery facility that is their peak season," said Beth Biggins-Ramer, executive director of the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District.

According to the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District, recycling centers see a 25% increase in the volume of material from Thanksgiving to the New Year.

"The volume will be super significant," said Biggins-Ramer.

A big contributor has historically been cardboard, as following the holidays, residents bring in loads of cardboard that once served as packaging for future gifts. In 2022, almost 73,000 tons of cardboard was recycled in Cuyahoga County.

Fortunately, in Cuyahoga, there is a quick turnaround for cardboard being repurposed, since the proper facilities are located in Northeast Ohio.

"We have four material recovery facilities in Northeast Ohio that all of this material goes to and all of that material has a value and is getting to market to be created into a new product," said Biggins-Ramer.
