SWACO, EMC Research Poll Shows Positive Views on Recycling in Central Ohio

According to a public opinion poll conducted by the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO) and EMC Research, the majority of residents in Franklin County, Ohio, recycle because it’s the right thing to do and it’s good for the environment.

The survey also found that for some residents, limitations on what is accepted for recycling and access to recycling containers both serve as obstacles to recycling. SWACO will use the survey results to assist with decisions regarding program offerings and the development of a public policy agenda.

Nearly three-quarters of those surveyed are recycling regularly, 93 percent say that recycling is a source of community pride, 94 percent say local governments should lead the way toward recycling and waste reduction and about half say they’ve been confused about what can be recycled.

Franklin County currently has a diversion rate of 46.5 percent, which is well above the national average of 34 percent. SWACO’s stated goal is to achieve a 50 percent diversion rate by the end of 2020 and a 75 percent rate by 2032.
