Covanta’s waste-to-energy (WTE) plant in Alexandria, Va., has received an award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). The society gave the plant — which is called the Alexandria/Arlington Resource Recovery Facility — its 2011 Large WTE Facility of the Year award; the award was in the combustion category.

According to a Covanta press release, the award was given “in recognition of [the plant’s] strong environmental and safety performance record.”

The plant processes nearly 1,000 tons of solid waste per day and combusts that material to produce as much as 23 megawatts of electricity, according to Covanta. The facility also recycles about 7,000 tons of metals each year.

“On behalf of the employees of Covanta Alexandria/Arlington, I am pleased to accept this award honoring our commitment to environmental performance and safety,” said Bryan Donnelly, manager of the plant, in a statement. “We work tirelessly to operate in the safest and most environmentally sound manner possible and are proud to serve our local community with a sustainable means of managing our municipal solid waste and clean, renewable energy.”
