The opening of GTA’s first new incinerator in decades is more than a year behind schedule because the new plant has been dealing with repairs, modifications and, most recently, the results of tests measuring toxic emissions and ash.
The $289-million Durham-York Energy Centre in Clarington was expected to be commercially operational and able to process 140,000 tonnes of household garbage annually in December 2014.
While it has processed up to 90,000 tonnes of household garbage since February, the plant won’t get full approval until sometime later this year.
