Atlanta, Ga. —., Houston, is trying to send trash from metro Atlanta to a landfill in Alabama, according to a report in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The firm is "seeking permission to send trash from nine metro counties to a landfill the company owns and operates in Lee County, Ala.," the paper says. "Waste Management officials say they are seeking alternatives because their Live Oak Landfill in DeKalb County [Ga.] is scheduled to close Nov. 30."
However, Lee County officials have told the paper that residents don’t want the county to allow the trash imports. "I haven’t had a citizen yet call me and say, ‘Please take Atlanta garbage down here," Bill English, chairman of the Lee County Commission, told the paper. "I’ve had plenty of calls the other way."
