Modern Landfill in Oklahoma 'Tomb' for Trash

At the Oklahoma Environmental Management Authority Landfill near El Reno, garbage is churned by a 100-ton excavator with spiked tires. 

From a distance, the landfill looks like a big hill, covered with weeds and tall grass, But drive to the top and there are piles of kitchen garbage bags, diapers, tree branches and refuse of all types, mixed with red Oklahoma dirt. 

The landfill accepts waste from nine Oklahoma communities, mostly in Canadian County. 

"In Oklahoma, with the wind, one of your biggest problems is going to be blowing litter," said David Griesel, general manager of the Oklahoma Environmental Management Authority. 

Plastic shopping bags in particular become little renegade kites, blowing across the piles of trash when they are caught in a breeze.
