Cities around the United States and throughout the world are celebrating Earth Day, which takes place today (April 22), but is celebrated long before and after. Cities take a variety of approaches to raise awareness of recycling, waste reduction and responsible environmental management. First celebrated in 1970, the event now is recognized in more than 192 countries annually.
