Waste Management Inc. will add 25 compressed natural gas ((CNG) fuel waste and recycling trucks to its fleet in Ottawa.

The Houston-based company also said in a news release that it plans to convert its current commercial collection fleet to CNG as part of the company’s North American fleet conversion strategy. The new residential trucks will come in 2012 after the city awarded Waste Management a collection district contract. The commercial conversion to CNG will happen following the company’s normal replacement of its diesel vehicles.

Waste Management said it also will be constructing a CNG fueling station in Stittsville, which is outside Ottawa. The company operates 17 CNG fueling stations in North America and plans to have nearly 50 operating by the end of 2012.

"Waste Management is embracing clean fuel technology as part of our commitment to achieving a zero emissions future," said Sherry Stevenson, municipal affairs manager for the company. "We've committed to transitioning our diesel fleet to CNG with 80 percent of our new trucks being CNG fueled, and these 25 trucks in Ottawa are part of this initiative.”
