McNeilus Introduces Meridian Front Loader
McNeilus Truck & Manufacturing Inc. unveiled the newest addition to the McNeilus lineup of refuse vehicles – the new Meridian front loader – at Waste Expo 2015 (booth 1673) in Las Vegas.
At a base body weight of 16,800 pounds, an industry-leading 14-ton payload and rated to lift 10,000 pounds, the Meridian is the perfect balance between lightweight and heavyweight to deliver advanced hauling performance for commercial and residential applications. The Meridian’s innovative design combines lighter weight materials with construction that’s durable and strong.
Developed with easier access and serviceability in mind, the Meridian features a clear headframe, underbody hydraulics and an electrical sidewall panel. Hydraulic valves have been relocated under the body rather than the typical placement on the headframe, eliminating problems caused by potential leaks and providing protection from hot exhaust. An enclosed sidewall panel houses the electrical components, keeping them away from heat and any refuse debris.
“The Meridian hits the productivity sweet spot our customers need with its reduced body weight, and increased lifting and payload capacities,” said Brad Nelson, president, McNeilus Truck & Manufacturing and Oshkosh Commercial Segment. “It was built by leveraging our proven technology, expertise and most importantly, customer input.”
Along with its unique design features, the Meridian incorporates other revolutionary McNeilus technology. McNeilus® CODE (controls on demand environment) comes standard in the new front loader. This simplified CAN-based control system provides superior diagnostics and troubleshooting capability at the operator’s fingertips. The powerful system reduces hardware requirements and saves time with an integrated “smart” fuse panel, intuitive display, adjustable parameters and features such as pre-trip reminders and vehicle status messages.
The Meridian is also available with McNeilus’ NGEN Tailgate CNG system. This system is offered in 60, 75, 90 and 105 DGE capacities and includes several unique benefits, such as:
A Pressure Relief Device (PRD) system that provides continuous heat protection along the full length of the CNG tanks, which is standard in all NGEN CNG configurations;
McNeilus® Strike Protection, providing a sturdy steel covering that surrounds key components;
Toolboxes integrated into the tailgate that free up space on the frame and provide storage;
Ground Level Fuel Shut-Off that allows operators or maintenance personnel to manually stop the flow of fuel at one convenient location;
Tailgate props designed for easier deployment and access; and
A pivoting structure that simplifies inspection.
Other features of the Meridian include:
Non-sliding tailgate that means less wear on the tailgate seal and tailgate props that offer easier access between the tailgate and body;
Flat body floor design that helps increase payload capacity and allows for easier access and quicker service of underbody components;
Largest hopper access door available for easier cleanouts, and curbside location that offers better access;
Angled mid-post to help channel arm force appropriately, contributing to a stronger body design;
Excalibre™ packing cylinders that improve reliability and performance, and prevent hydraulic contamination.
“We designed the Meridian by listening to our customers who want improved productivity, safety and serviceability, and validated the front loader through rigorous lab and field testing,” said Greg McCarty, McNeilus director of product management. “The Meridian – like all of our vehicles – also comes standard with our expanding network of customer service centers across North America.”

KEITH’s Walking Floor Technology
For more than 35 year, KEITH has worked to adapt its proven WALKING FLOOR technology to the waste industry, resulting in a safer, more efficient and versatile trailer. Haulers using specialized, steel V-FLOOR slats are expanding backhauling opportunities to include abrasive materials, in addition to standard MSW loads.
Today’s hauler must make the most of their trailer and backhauling can double the efficiency of a fleet. A steel V-FLOOR system allows haulers to take loads other trailers must pass on. The V-FLOOR slats are designed for higher impact and abrasion and are suitable for demolition, scrap metal, aggregate and specialty waste products such as fly ash—the byproduct of coal energy production.
According to KEITH sales director Mike Robinson, KEITH customers are seeing success in hauling waste into the landfill and fly ash on the backhaul. “Pairing the V-FLOOR slat design with the patented V-SWEEP clean-out system provides them the ability to haul and unload both materials efficiently.” The design of the V-SWEEP system allows it to form to the flooring, cleaning material out as the trailer unloads.
Designed to handle a variety of bulk products, KEITH WALKING FLOOR systems offer many benefits over conventional tipper trailers. The horizontal unloading action of a moving floor system eliminates many of the hazards using tipping trailers to unload products in the field. Trailers with WALKING FLOOR systems can safely unload on uneven ground and in buildings. Benefits over traditional belt trailers include handling a larger cubic capacity and less maintenance.
The WALKING FLOOR system serves as the flooring of a trailer and is a self-unloading system. This “moving floor” unloader is made of a series of floor slats, which are powered by a hydraulic drive. As the floor cycles through its phases, material is conveyed or unloaded.
ADGS Delivers Densifying System to Somerset Recycling; First Promeco Installation in U.S.
Promeco SpA is exhibiting in booth 3760 at Waste Expo 2015, taking place in Las Vegas, June 1-4. ADG Solutions is the exclusive representative for Promeco densification systems in North America.
Somerset Recycling Services, Inc., Somerset, KY, expects to realize a significant gain in efficiency and economy from a new Promeco PES600 densification system supplied to them by plastics-reclaim specialist ADG Solutions, Fairfield, CT. This is the first installation in North America for Promeco SpA, an Italian company based in Como.
According to Sandy Guthrie, President of ADG Solutions, the PES 600 is a highly flexible system that can convert all kinds of plastics scrap – with up to 20% moisture – into strands that, after cooling, can be size reduced in a standard granulator to yield uniform regrind that is easy to convey and process. The unit Somerset purchased is equipped with two short (15-inch) counter-rotating auger screws and can process up to 3300 lb/hr.
Somerset will use the densifier to reprocess mainly polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) film and fiber. The process is continuous. Shredded material goes into a holding bin with two metering screws that feed material to an inclined vibrating table that guides the scrap into the open feed throat of the densifier. Twin counter-rotating screws compact the material and pressure and shear forces raise its temperature to between 380 and 390°F and forces it out a die. Water vaporizes during the process, resulting in final moisture content lower than 2%.
In addition to the PES 600, Somerset also bought a Promeco calender that receives the strands of resin as they exit the die. The calender flattens the strands, forcing out trapped gas and beginning the cooling process. The flattened strands then are picked up by a cooling conveyor that sprays water on the material as it is transported to a Promeco KR Shredder – specially designed for the shredding of hot densified plastics – for final size reduction.
Alan Keck, President of Somerset Recycling, says his company decided to work with ADG Solutions because their decades of experience in the field. “I know Sandy Guthie and trust him to help us find the best equipment for our needs. As for Promeco, I traveled to Italy and I saw their facilities and I talked with Paolo Rebai, the owner, and I developed an extreme comfort level. Promeco is an engineering-based company and that’s what we were looking for.”
Keck says that, until now, Somerset has been using tub densifiers and he anticipates that the new Promeco system will reduce labor requirements, energy consumption and maintenance costs while processing more product. “We’ve been using these batch densifiers for 20 years,” he says, “but they are slower and much less efficient than our new densifying extruder. We will continue to use them for a while, but we will gradually phase them out.”
Somerset, with over 100 full-time employees and in excess of 102,000 sq ft of facilities, sells its reclaimed material to plastics molders and extruders. Depending on the source of the scrap and the condition of the resin after it has been reprocessed, it may be used to make products like plastic lumber, outdoor furniture, trash bins and more.
Peterson Launches Brilliant New LumenX LED Strobe Lights
Peterson Manufacturing has extended its rapidly growing, USA-made LumenX LED line with a 4" Round Strobe light and a 6" Oval Strobe. Both models are rated for use as directional flashing warning devices on Class 1 and 2 emergency, maintenance and service vehicles.
Engineered around Peterson’s revolutionary LumenX architecture, the high-performance LED strobes feature the latest white-diode LEDs and breakthrough optics. The radical new lens design –– a Peterson exclusive –– illuminates the entire lens fully and evenly without “hotspots” or “dead zones,” regardless of viewing angle. Whether lensed in amber, white, or red, the result is a strobe of piercing intensity that far exceeds the higher SAE J595 Class 1 requirements.
According to Vice President-Product Management, Kristen Goodson, Peterson’s entire LumenX line is engineered to exceed recommended performance standards.
“We believe a brighter light is a safer light,” Goodson said, “and so do many states and municipalities now demanding Class 1 visibility for their vehicle warning lights. We’ve gone one step further for this market by designing our amber and white warning lights to be almost 75 percent brighter than the higher Class 1 requirement.”
LumenX LED Strobes feature:
73 quad flashes per minute
Brightness exceeds SAE J595 Class 1 specs
Exceeds specs when mounted in any 360º orientation
12- and 24-volt compatibility
AMP-compatible weatherproof receptacle for best corrosion protection available
Grommet- and flange-mounts available all models
“We’re proud to be adding two more intensely bright products to our LumenX line,” said Goodson. “And we’re equally proud to make them right here in Grandview, Missouri.”
CB&E Unveils Revolutionary Jam-Release Technology For Two-Ram Balers
Catawba Baler & Equipment (CB&E) introduces the market’s only two-ram baler that quickly and safely ejects jammed recycle material from the charge chamber without manually digging out the material. Unlike other baler designs that inconsistently attempt to eject an oversized bale at the wire tier, CB&E’s new Gold Rush Series 12/9 two-ram baler with optional Free Jam™ technology replaces the “gathering wall” of a conventional baler with a patent pending jam-release system. This gives operators push-button control from the tower over the Free Jam release door to clear jams in a matter of minutes, not days.
“Recycling facilities operating conventional two-ram balers know all-too-well the time and danger associated with manually clearing a jam in the charge chamber,” mentions Mark McDonald, president of CB&E. “Our optional Free Jam system on our Gold Rush Series baler is all about operator safety. It virtually eliminates the need for a person to enter the baler to manually clear a jam. Operating a conventional two-ram baler without push-button jam-release technology is like purchasing a new car today without airbags. ”
Beyond advancing safe operation, the optional Free Jam system on CB&E’s Gold Rush series baler increases profit potential for any recycling facility operating conventional two-ram balers. McDonald explains that even medium-size operations baling 2,500 tons (2,268 tonnes) of material per month can save more than $300,000 annually in lost labor and production revenue. “An operation of this size will experience about 10 jams per month on average,” he explains, pulling from more than 20 years of industry experience. “This results in unproductive man-hours and expense for clearing jams and more than 150 lost bale-tons (136 bale-tonnes) of productivity. Material jams are extremely expensive for a recycling operation.
As an added benefit, the Free Jam system greatly enhances baler accessibility and serviceability. The Free Jam door opens to offer unobstructed access to the charge chamber from ground level for hydraulic cylinder maintenance and wear plate inspection and replacement. Designed to provide long wear life for maximum uptime, the baler’s wear plates are constructed of 0.5-in (12.7-mm) Hardox 500 material.
Custom-built to customer specifications and manufactured in America at CB&E’s Statesville, N.C. facility, the UL listed and approved Gold Rush Series 12/9 two-ram baler is loaded with features that deliver a long service life with maximum uptime. Built to last, the 50-ton (45.6-tonnes) Gold Rush baler boasts the industry’s strongest machine structure with a heavy-duty reinforced subframe and side walls. Twin 75-hp (56-kW) electric motors allow continuous operation even if one motor is out of service. Laser guided tracking of the press bars features a redundant proximity switch, permitting operation in case of laser malfunction. Redundant filtration – 10 micron main kidney loop with high-pressure filters and additional in-line high-pressure filters – safeguards the hydraulic system and O-Rings from particle damage.

News in Brief
HRL Technology
HRL Technology in Australia was recently engaged by Visy to assist with the development of a waste combustion facility at its Campbellfield plant in Melbourne, Victoria. Visy is one of Australia’s largest recycling companies and has been at the forefront of recycling for many years. The facility was proposed to convert waste to energy that would otherwise go to landfill.
HRL Technology was engaged to conduct testing and analysis to characterise the waste stream as a critical input to the procurement of the boiler and associated equipment. The characterisation work determined key parameters such as: moisture and ash content, calorific value, etc. HRL Technology also developed a process for accurately determining the level of renewable/non-renewable component of the waste stream which in turn assisted Visy with its regulatory reporting requirements. Assistance was also provided with plant performance.
