After banning textiles from being thrown away, Southampton, Mass. has seen a record amount of textiles recycled last year.
In late 2022, Massachusetts banned clothing, footwear, bedding, towels, and other textiles from being thrown into landfills and incinerators in favor of donating them to those in need and recycling their fibers into other products. Since, the state has seen a huge shift in the total amount of textiles recycled.
According to the Town of Southampton, the weight of textiles had a dramatic increase in 2023 as the town recycled 22,210 pounds of textiles.
For every pound of textiles collected in Southampton, $0.05 is deposited into the Transfer Station Enterprise Fund as recycling revenue to offset the fees users pay at the Transfer Station.
