E-Cigarettes and Vapes Pose Disposal Challenges

The surge in popularity of disposable e-cigarettes is posing a new environmental challenge in the United States.

With around 12 million disposable vapes being purchased each month, communities are grappling with how to safely dispose of these small, battery-powered devices, considered hazardous waste due to their nicotine, lithium, and metal content.

Federal law prohibits their disposal in regular trash. Local officials are finding makeshift solutions, including transporting large quantities to industrial waste incinerators, like one in northern Arkansas, to avoid potential fires and environmental contamination.

The lack of clear regulations and the environmental impact of disposal are pressing concerns for communities. In New York City, the disposal cost exceeds $1 per unit.
