Earlier this week, SJI, the parent company of Elizabethtown Gas Co. broke ground on a new, $440 million renewable energy project set to be the largest food waste-to-renewable natural gas facility in the United States.

The project, going up in Linden, N.J., will divert 1,475 tons of waste from landfills daily, all while producing biofuel to heat homes and businesses served by Elizabethtown. The new project comes together via SJI and partners Captona and RNG Energy Solutions.

“This project is an important reminder about the critical role that our State’s natural gas utilities and natural gas infrastructure will play in our energy transition,” said Mike Renna, president and CEO of SJI.

“From the creation of hundreds of jobs, the potential to reduce greenhouse gases, and the use of innovative technology, this project is another example of how SJI is leading the way toward a cleaner energy future.”
