A home surveillance video shows that a Baltimore city garbage truck has been collecting cans instead of trash, answering an ongoing mystery.

“I was wondering where they went,” said Morrell Park resident Anthony Mills. “I’ve lived here most of my life. You do have some folks that live on the Boulevard that, you know, just leave their trash out. On a windy day, it will blow around and make a mess.”

Mills says that he assumed someone must have been taking the bins for recycling or to turn them into money, citing that the neighborhood is known for its challenges. Later, Mills’ neighbor revealed that their home surveillance footage captured the cans being taken by employees.

“They just take our trash cans, put them in the trash truck, and dispose of them. They crushed them! You know, what are we supposed to do now? As a community to help keep our neighborhood clean, and when it’s clean, it’s also safe,” said Mills, “It was appalling.”

After residents complained, the Department of Public Works (DPW) responded by clearing the cub and crushing the trash cans. DPW says it has started an investigation into why this happened and who is responsible. DPW noted that this goes against its commitment to providing quality services to the community.

The DPW claims that new cans will arrive within the next two weeks.
