Two years later, Ward Recycling is being fined £2.15 million after an employee was crushed to death under the wheels of an 18-tonne shovel loader.

Dean Atkinson, 35, was killed instantly after a truck hit and drover over him as he was returning to his workstation on January 30, 2020. Ward Recycling was found guilty of corporate manslaughter and health and safety breaches following a trial at Teesside Crown Court back in December.

The judge handed down the £2.15 million fine and called the matter a “truly staggering health and safety failure” at the plant. It was said that the plant had no traffic management plan to ensure workers could safely walk across the plant’s floor. Also, there was no health and safety officer employed at the Hartlepool facility, where the plant was located.
