Closed Jacksonville Landfill Turning Into Recreational Area

The Sunbeam Road Landfill in Jacksonville, Fl. is getting new life as a multi-use recreation destination, after closing almost 40 years ago.

The Sunbeam Road Landfill in Jacksonville, Fla. is getting new life as a multi-use recreation destination, after closing almost 40 years ago.

The landfill operated from 1972 to 1986 and is looking to welcome the community for recreational amenities. Recently, JTC Running donated $85,000 to the Jacksonville chapter of the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association for the construction of a 5K running trail. The site will also include a dog park, market, pickleball courts, and airsoft facility.

The trail has entered the planning process and clearing the site is expected to take about six months to complete.
