Republic Services Seeks to Amend San Angelo, Texas, Contract

Due to the shift made by China in the global recycling industry, Republic Services hopes to work with the city of San Angelo, Texas, to consider alternative recycling methods.
China, which once processed more than 50 percent of the world's recyclables, tightened the restrictions on what it will accept and is now taking less than 10 percent—and no mixed paper, Republic noted.
According to a Go San Angelo report, possible alternatives to the curbside recycling program include:
Pass increased recycling costs to consumers
Temporarily suspend the marketing of material—meaning recyclables would go to the landfill
Change accepted material
Change service levels by adding drop-off sites
Implement a subscription-based recycling service

Republic Services wants to amend the recycling portion of its 10-year trash contract with the City of San Angelo — signed in 2014 — because of a tectonic shift in the worldwide recycling industry, it said in a letter to city officials.
The company asked the City Council at its Tuesday meeting to consider alternative recycling methods because of rising costs of material collection, transport and processing.
