Pity the April Fool
April 5, 2012
With April Fool’s Day jokes, nothing’s off limits. And that’s what brought composting and McDonald’s together.
In a tongue-in-cheek story from the TriplePundit website, the story said the fast food giant was going to improve its sustainability by turning more than 20 of its outdoor PlayPlaces for kids into composting facilities and urban gardens. The move came after mothers were disturbed about finding bacterial content at the playgrounds, the story went, and it would deflect criticism of the company for other environmental shortcomings.
The story quoted a McDonald’s sustainability official saying, “Even though the scientific evidence suggests that it takes a few decades for a Chicken McNugget to decompose, there is no reason that a leftover McNugget should end up in a landfill instead of a compost bin.”
At least McDonald’s was the butt of the joke, for the most part. And some of you probably think, “Hey, that’s not a bad idea.”
