A city commission voted 6-2-2 to revise the city’s waste management plan to pave the way for the construction of a construction and demolition landfill in Augusta, Ga.
A committee agreed last week to allow the landfill to be constructed on Dixon Airline Road.
In November, a plan to build a gas-to-energy facility in the city, got nixed with supporters of the project saying it was due to the city not understanding the potential financial benefits of the plan.

Attorney Wright McLeod pitched the proposal to commissioners last week on behalf of Kirk Laney, who obtained the 150-acre former inert landfill on Dixon Airline Road from Jeffrey Harris in 2015.
Johnson said that in addition to Augusta having about 140 years’ worth of available landfill space, the project could affect the city’s bond rating and requires a special zoning exception.
“We have a zoning issue, we have a needs issue and we have a financial issue,” he said.
McLeod said the project will be a boon for builders and haulers who base disposal decisions on distance and cost. The nearest similar facilities are in Appling and Graniteville.
