Rutherford County, Tenn. has entered into a five-year contract with WM of Tennessee to transport and dispose of waste from the area’s future transfer station.

The contract is initially for five years but is renewable for up to 20 years with the company. The transfer station will be in Murfreesboro, Tenn., and should be completed in March or April 2025.

"Signing this contract is a part of making sure the fastest growing county in Tennessee is on its way to becoming solid waste independent,” Rutherford County Mayor Joe Carr said.  "This is a landmark as we continue to provide essential services for Rutherford County in the most cost-effective manner."

The transfer station will be operated by Rutherford County and will be financially self-supporting with no property tax dollars associated with the facility’s operation.

“Today marks a significant milestone in the march toward solid waste management independence for Rutherford County,” Rutherford County Solid Waste Director Bishop Wagener said. “Waste collected at our new solid waste transfer station will find its final destination with WM for the next several years. Thank you to Mayor Carr, the Rutherford County Board of Commissioners, and the Rutherford County citizens for your continued support as we grow as a community”.
