Lincoln, Neb. has chosen a company to build and operate a biogas facility, turning the city’s landfill methane gas into renewable natural gas that can be sold.
Following 10 responses for proposals, Lincoln chose Sparq Renewables, an Oklahoma City-based company, to build a $50 million facility at the landfill. The city plans to enter a 15-year contract with Sparq Renewables, with two five-year renewals. Lincoln officials estimate the project will generate $96 million over the next 20 years.
“It’s still a newish, sustainable innovation that allows us to make progress on our Climate Action Plan, gives us an economic driver because we will be reinvesting it into the solid waste program and providing essential services to Lincoln,” said Liz Elliott, Lincoln Transportation and Utilities Director.
