Galena, Kansas, Mayor Approaches Commission with Landfill Application

Galena Mayor Dale Oglesby attempted to submit an application for a Galena Solid Waste Management Facility to the Cherokee County Commission at Monday's meeting.

“I have a great deal of respect for the commission,” Oglesby said. “We’re not trying to pull a fast one on anybody, I told you at the public hearing I’d bring you a filled out application so here it is.”

Oglesby said Galena has always been on the forefront of environmental change in Cherokee County. He recalled how the area was at one point bordering on the largest superfund site in the country. Oglesby is referring to the former mining region of Southeast Kansas, Southwest Missouri and Northeast Oklahoma, now known as the Tar Creek Superfund site, which was declared a superfund in 1983.
