New recycling bins are coming to Central Park in New York City, designed to accept discarded pizza boxes, aiming to cut down on rodent issues.

Near the Great Lawn area, the Central Park Conservancy is rolling out a pilot program that consists of recycling bins shaped to accept pizza boxes.

“The traditional circular waste bins are simply not designed to accommodate the boxes, leading to jammed cans that can attract rodents,” conservancy spokeswoman Kat Brady said to NBC News.

“On a warm busy day, the conservancy can remove more than 100 boxes in this area of the park alone.”

Recently, Mayor Eric Adams announced the first “National Urban Rat Summit” scheduled for September to discuss rodent mitigation. One day after the initial announcement, the bins popped up in Central Park.

Officials say that the pizza box recycling bins will expand throughout the park if they prove to be successful.
