New Cell Begins Operation at Ontario County, N.Y., Landfill

Had the 43.5-acre expansion at the Ontario County Landfill not been approved, the landfill would be at or close to capacity right now. But the expansion was approved in January, extending the landfill’s life, based on the current limit of 300,000 tons a year, until 2028.

Horizontal landfill-gas collectors have been installed in the first cell. In addition, plans are being developed for the addition of about 30 new landfill-gas vertical collection wells to be installed in 2017, along with horizontal collector wells in both new cells.

Additional landfill-gas collection infrastructure is planned for 2018 to 2022. The methane is collected and used as fuel for electricity-generating turbines on the landfill property, operated by a separate company.
