Aldi UK continues to make improvements to its waste output and its latest move looks to save thousands of tonnes of food waste in its stores.

The supermarket chain is working on a trial program that will see crownless pineapples in stores to reduce food waste. The crowns of pineapples are commonly thrown away by customers but in the new trial, they will be removed in the production process to be used for recycling.

The recycled pineapple crowns will be used to make animal feed and the green leaves will go towards preparing next year’s crop of pineapples.

The removal of the pineapple crowns will reduce food waste by about 1,400 tonnes annually and reduce 187 tonnes of cardboard since more pineapples can fit into boxes after having the crowns removed.

"At Aldi, we are committed to finding sustainable solutions that benefit both our customers and the environment,” said Liz Fox, National Sustainability Director at Aldi.

"This trial of crownless pineapples is just one of the latest innovative changes we’re testing out to minimize waste and reduce our carbon footprint."
