Minnesota County Extends Food Waste, Composting Collection Program Through 2025

A food waste pilot program launched this year in Olmsted County, Minn., is being extended through 2025.

A food waste pilot program launched this year in Olmsted County, Minn., is being extended through 2025.

An audit of Olmsted County revealed that food waste makes up nearly 21% of the county’s trash, about 24,000 tons. The program, a drop-off household composting program, launched in June and roughly 150 households participated in dropping off compostable waste and food scraps to a compost bin.

The program stemmed from an initial effort to collect and compost food waste from Rochester businesses. Food waste is collected by Green RU, a composting hauler already operating in the area.
