Officials in Lincoln County, Mont. are looking for ways to cut costs amid plans to expand the area’s landfill.

The landfill is expected to hit capacity sometime in 2027, but the proposed expansion will add 17.4 acres of property to the southeast of the current space. Of the expansion, 14.3 acres will be used for active landfilling activities. The expansion will extend the life of the landfill by another 29 years.

Along with landfill plans, hauling costs have been at the center of discussion in the county. The county’s current contract was not granted an extension with its current hauler and refuse assessments have increased from $15 to $150 per year to support landfill operations.
