Officials Approve More Funds for Connecticut Waste Diversion Programs

Connecticut municipalities will receive $10 million in funding after the State Bond Commission approves it to help reduce the amount of trash thrown away.

Connecticut municipalities will receive $10 million in funding after the State Bond Commission approves it to help reduce the amount of trash thrown away.

Connecticut ran 15 programs across the last three years, mainly working to reduce food waste, one of the state's major areas of preventable waste. According to Katie Dykes, commissioner of the state’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, the pilot programs were successful in diverting trash and reducing food waste.

“Diversion can really help to reduce the amount of waste that we need to send to other states and communities and other states for, landfilling and disposal,” Dykes said. “But the challenges remain pretty significant.”
