Singapore Approves New Law that Provides Protections for Donors, Reduces Food Waste

A new food waste law has been passed by Singapore’s parliament which provides donor protections and should help reduce food waste and encourage food donations.

The Good Samaritan Food Donation Bill works with individuals and organization that give out free food if they meet four conditions: food must be safe and suitable when delivered, it must have instructions so recipients know how to keep it suitable for consumption, it must include a use by date, and must show the item’s history with the donor to verify safety an hygiene rules were followed.

If donors follow each of these rules, they are now protected under the new law from lawsuits in case problems stem from the donated food. The law sets out to stop restaurants and caterers from throwing away edible food out of worry of liability issues.
