West Hartford, CT to Introduce Voluntary Food Scrap Program in 2025 Following Successful Pilot

After a successful pilot program, West Hartford, Conn. is preparing to roll out a voluntary food waste diversion initiative to the entire town.

 West Hartford has been running a unit-based pricing and food scrap diversion program since May. Now, the city is sunsetting the program and will roll out a voluntary version in 2025. Participating homes combined to divert 160,000 pounds of food scraps during the pilot program.

The Town Council decided to make the program voluntary as a mandatory program could cause issues over added costs to taxpayers and enforcement. During the pilot program, only about half of the homes in the area participated in the trial.
