A new glass recycling program from Workwell Industries began in Portland, Ky. earlier this week.

The new program will offer a more sustainable way to make bottles for bourbon and it is the first of its kind in the state of Kentucky.

"The plan is to create a dedicated path for glass that has reached its product's end. In other words, after you've consumed that bottle, it's making sure that glass can be used again," said Gov. Andy Bershear.

A partnership with O-I Glass, worth $350,000, and other spirit companies, Workwell can now prepare glass spirits for packaging to recycle into new bottles.

"We are now able to get glass content recycled on-site and turn it into cullet to be able to turn into the glass producer. So, this is pretty much a closed-loop glass processing," said Kenya Freeman, the president and CEO of Workwell.
