WM Suggests Discontinuing Glass Recycling in East Wenatchee, Wash.

As demand for recycled glass falls in Washington, the East Wenatchee officials and Waste Management negotiate changes to the city's recycling program.

WM's current contract with East Wenatchee ends in 2021. While talks are still in the proposal stage, the company has suggested to discontinue glass recycling in the future. WM has been working since 2018 to end glass recycling in Central Washington as well.

The Washington Association of Counties Solid Waste Managers agreed with WM's recommendation.

Residents have expressed concerns, saying it "makes no sense" to send materials to the landfill that can be reused or recycled.

The closest glass recycler is six hours away, which makes it difficult to justify the costs associated with a glass recycling program.
