CHRIS CARLSON

On August 27, Dr. Marcus Eriksen and Joel Paschal completed their three-month, 2,300-mile voyage from Long Beach, Calif., to Honolulu on a raft constructed entirely of recyclables. Floating on pontoons made up of 15,000 plastic bottles, the craft was powered by a Cesna 310 engine. Appropriately named JUNK, the voyage is part of a project by the Algalita Marine Research Foundation to alert people to the problem of plastics litter in oceans.
