Alabama residents in Baldwin County are getting together to oppose a proposed landfill in their area, citing concerns over traffic and smells.
A few organizers have gathered hundreds of signatures on paper and online to oppose the landfill. They’re also preparing to send out 1,200 flyers to neighbors asking them to speak out against the new site as well.
The Baldwin County Commission is being asked to reopen, by Baldwin County Solid Waste, the Red Hill Landfill to accept construction and demolition waste. Baldwin County Solid Waste says the site is expected to see 30 to 45 trucks per day, but stresses that those trucks will not have a major impact on traffic in the area.
"Forty-five trucks a day is what they're saying. And there's only one way in here and one way back out. So that's going to be 90 passes," said Tim Murray, Baldwin County Resident.
"Probably the most disheartening thing is the way that nobody knew anything about this. Everybody had heard about the c&d landfill only and nothing about moving that transfer station out here where every garbage truck in this part of the world is going to come right down this two-lane road," said Emily Ryan, Baldwin County Resident.
Terri Graham, Baldwin County Solid Waste Director, says that most of the messages they’ve received about the decision have been traffic related. She continues to stress that there are no construction and debris landfills north of 1-10, but with Baldwin County expanding, one is needed.
