New York’s largest landfill, Seneca Meadows, is caught in a fight between operator and residents on whether the site should be shut down or continue to accept waste.

New York’s largest landfill, Seneca Meadows, is caught in a fight between operator and residents on whether the site should be shut down or continue to accept waste.

Seneca Falls Town Board decided to table the discussion for three months earlier this week. Waste Connections, the landfills operator, is making a case to keep the site open through 2040 and awaiting the board’s crucial vote to grant the company the proper permits to continue operations.

Area residents are against the continuation of the landfill, stating they no longer want to be “dumped on” and deny the permits that would allow the landfill to increase seven stories in height. Residents at the town board meeting cited concerns about noxious smells and questioned the impact of lung cancer in the area due to the landfill.
