The Niagara Falls landfill could be facing a substantial fine after reaching a settlement with federal environmental regulators over the site’s noxious odors.
The proposed settlement with Allied Waste Niagara Falls Landfill would see the company required to pay a $671,000 penalty for violating the federal Clean Air Act. Plus, EPA officials said the terms of the settlement would require Allied Waste to operate gas collection and control systems that would reduce the amount of methane and other chemicals being released from the landfill.
“Methane is a climate super pollutant that is 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide, and landfills are the third largest sources of methane emissions in the United States,” said David M. Uhlmann, assistant administrator for EPA’s Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance. “Today’s agreement will require Allied to control its unlawful methane emissions and hold the company accountable for its violations of the Clean Air Act.”
