Virginia Landfills Received More Trash in 2001

Richmond -- According to a study released by the state Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), more than 4.8 million tons of out-of-state trash were shipped to Virginia landfills in 2001, a 3.2 percent increase over 1998 levels.

More than 1.7 million tons came from Maryland, while 1.2 million tons came from New York state. Virginians dumped 23.7 million tons of trash in state landfills, according to the report.
