It was a less than relaxing holiday weekend for firefighters in Portage, Wis. after there were multiple flare ups at the Columbia County Recycling and Solid Waste Center.
Last week, the Columbia County Recycling and Solid Waste Center caught fire and in the following days, the site saw several flare ups. Firefighters were called to the site three times over Memorial Day weekend to address the flare ups.
Troy Haase, Portage Fire Chief, noted that a fire on Monday night was “larger and more concentrated to one area.”
The fire at the facility last week destroyed multiple buildings and produced a large amount of black smoke. The fire was said to be caused by a bale of cardboard then spread throughout the site.
