Tennessee County Seeks to Stop Landfill Leaks

County officials want a new system to prevent their two landfills from leaking leachate into the Stones River.

"We want to build a better leachate-management system to take care of our leachate that’s been generated," said Mac Nolen, who oversees Rutherford County's landfills that are near the private Middle Point Landfill off East Jefferson Pike in the Walter Hill community north of Murfreesboro. "The system has not been designed yet."

Nolen persuaded the County Commission Public Works & Planning Committee Tuesday night to endorse a plan in a 7-0 vote to spend $100,000 on the design and initial construction of a system that will collect the leachate.
