Maryland, Delaware Beaches Shut Down After Medical Waste Washes on Shore

Over the weekend, medical waste began washing on shore in Fenwick Island, Ocean City, Dewey Beach, the Indian River Inlet, and Assateague Island, prompting the areas to close.

Over the weekend, medical waste began washing on shore in Fenwick Island, Ocean City, Dewey Beach, the Indian River Inlet, and Assateague Island, prompting the areas to close.

Hypodermic needles and other supplies have shown up on shores, requiring Emergency Response Teams to be on the scene. A post from the Assateague Island National Seashore said that health authorities were investigating but they did not know where the debris came from.

"We are working closely with the Worcester County Health Department and other public health authorities to investigate the source of the medical waste," said Joe Theobald, Emergency Services Director for the town of Ocean City, Md.

"Until we are certain the beaches are safe, we recommend wearing shoes while on the sand and avoiding ocean activities."
