A new deal between WM and Winters Bros. Waste Systems will see one of the industry’s leading companies increase its service ability and operations, while providing best in class service to the people of Long Island.

The deal between the two companies was completed on June 15, although the terms of the deal have not been announced. The merger includes all of Winters Bros.’ hauling operations, long-haul logistics, and 12 transfer stations on Long Island. This transaction will further strengthen WM as one of the waste industry’s leading companies and shore up its national service platform by serving the people of Long Island.

Winters Bros. has been serving Long Island in some capacity since 1950, and the locally owned and operated company has built a strong network and reputation with its customers over the last 70 years. As Long Islanders themselves, Winers Bros. made a strong commitment to community involvement and unparalleled service. Now with WM entering the Long Island space, the plan is for both companies to improve that service by increasing productivity.

“Our two companies have known and respected each other for many years, and the time is right for us to take the next logical step in our evolution allowing us [to] accelerate the application of technology to enhance services on Long Island,” said Sean Winters, Chairman and CEO of Winters Bros.

“WM has an extensive presence across the United States and there are opportunities to internalize significant volumes of waste while ensuring environmentally sound solutions for customers on Long Island.  Winters Bros. developed a broad regional footprint across Long Island over the past 11 years.”

WM will integrate the collection, transfer, and recycling operations from Winters Bros. on Long Island, creating a platform full of new advantages for customers in the area. Utilzing its strength and experience, WM takes this opportunity and put forth its industry leading approach of standardized business practices to improve productivity and look for new operating efficiencies.

“By building on the best practices of both companies, we can further improve productivity and operating margins, while advancing our strategic priorities and investing in the ongoing development of our business and critical people resources.  This merger allows us to capitalize on the attractive business opportunities on Long Island and enhance our ability to provide comprehensive solutions to the waste-stream management needs of our customers,” said Jimmy Winters, Executive Vice President of Winters Bros.

This move marks the latest acquisition in the industry by WM as the service giant announced back in June that WM had agreed on a deal to acquire Stericycle to the tune of $7.2 billion.

"WM has acquired Winters Brothers Waste Systems which provides solid waste management and recycling services to municipal, residential, commercial and industrial customers in Long Island. This acquisition will grow WM’s footprint and add complementary assets and operations, as well as a team with a shared focus on safety, outstanding service and operational excellence," said a WM representative to Waste360 in an email.
