Kauai, Hawaii Bans Public Fund Purchases of Single-Use Plastics

On the sunny island of Kauai, government funds can no longer be used to purchase single-use plastics.

Mayor Derek Kawakami signed a policy in February 2020 prohibiting "any county-funded organization from buying single-use plastic items, such as water bottles, straws, utensils and bags." The new law took effect on January 1, 2021.

In addition to not allowing county-funded organizations to purchase plastics, all events that require a permit will be included from buying and distributing single-use items.
