Gjenge Makers, a factory in Nairobi, Kenya, takes plastic waste and turns it into a brick that is five to seven times stronger than concrete.
The process was developed by Nzambi Matee, who used her engineering skills to develop the process that involved mixing plastic waste with sand. Each day, the factory produces about 1,500 bricks. So far, Gjene Movers has used 20 tons of recycled plastic. Matee hopes to upgrade equipment so that output can be tripled.
