After months of discussing possible changes to its waste and recycling collection system, the city of Butte, Mont., approved and implemented new waste and recycling programs nearly two years ago. Trash is now collected via automated trucks and recycling is now collected on a voluntary basis.
While the programs have been in place for a couple of years now, the city is still dealing with minor complaints from residents and residents who place anything and everything in their recycling bins, which contaminates the entire bin. The city is continuously working with residents to educate them about what can and cannot be recycled and to address their complaints regarding the new programs.

Change doesn't always go over well in Butte, Montana.
That's why local officials spent months and months pitching major changes to the way trash is collected here as well as a voluntary recycling program before setting the new programs in motion two years ago.
Among the officials' selling points for the new garbage system were cleaner alleys and a cleaner city, since large, standard-sized trash bins with hinged lids would usually keep animals and the wind at bay.
